In a press release by the Danish Government, a political initiative called ”Opportunity Africa” that combines traditional foreign policy, development cooperation, trade and export promotion in Africa has been launched.
The aim of the programme is to strengthen Danish interests in Africa and to also have a stronger cooperation with partners in Africa, for inclusive growth, employment and entrepreneurship in Africa. The Danish Government stressed that there is need for an intensified economic diplomacy in Africa, to assist the implementation of the necessary structural reforms, to promote green investment and thereby strengthening framework conditions on the continent. They believe that, the initiative will create a growth that is sustainable and self-sustaining.
”The growing need for energy and continued pressure on natural resources in African countries require that governments and private companies work together to ensure that economic growth is sustainable and inclusive” says Trade and European Affairs Minister, Nick Hækkerup.
Denmark has been a world leader in development cooperation for many decades, including support for good governance and economic development in Africa. Denmark is one of the few countries in the world that have met the UN target of giving at least 0.7 percent of its gross national income to development aid.
