Ethiopia and Kenya are working together to increase the length of stay of tourists visiting East Africa, tourism officials say.
Having different tourist attractions, some of them world heritage sites, both countries believe that cooperation will help them to improve their tourism industries, says Ethiopia’s State Minister of Tourism, Mulugeta Seid.
He said here Thursday that since the two countries have different types of tourist attractions, increasing the length of stay of tourists can be more easily achieved. Most of Ethiopia’s tourist destinations are cultural and spiritual, while Kenya is home for attractions displaying various aspects of nature, he noted.
Creating a system which will allow tourists to visit attractions in both countries within a single trip is important to improve the tourism sector and increase the length of stay of tourists in the region, he added.
“The aspect of cooperation is creating a good opportunity to increase the length of stay of tourists in the East African region. If we can have a system that allows tourists who come to Kenya to also visit Ethiopia and vice versa, we can manage to increase the length of the tourists’ stay in East Africa.”
Kenya Tourism Board Managing Director Muriithi Ndegwa had said in a recent interview with the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) that his country was keen to work to improve the tourism industry with Ethiopia, which is the seat for various regional and international agencies and foreign diplomats.
