According to Malawi News Agency – The Norwegian Government granted US$1 million to the Malawi Government aimed at improving education standards and providing basic essential health services. The money will also help in building infrastructure, and procuring of medical equipment among others.
Norwegian Prime Minister, Erna Solberg disclosed this Tuesday at Kamuzu Palace during the State Banquet that Professor Peter Mutharika organized in honour of her visit to the country.
“Despite our normal support to the Malawi government, Norway is extending its assistance to Malawi focusing in areas of food security, capacity building and education among others,” said Solberg.
She said she was inspired by the way the country was running its affairs and that her visit to the country is a demonstration of the confidence and trust that the Norwegian government has to the Malawian government.
President Professor Peter Mutharika commended the Norwegian government for the assistance which he said will help in improving various sectors of the country.
Mutharika said recent statistics show that Malawi has so far benefited a total amount of US$100 million direct aid package from Norway and also through major programmes such as the Health Sector Wide Approach Programme.
“On annual basis, the Norwegian government gives the Malawi government Norwegian Kroner (NOK) 60 million, which is equivalent to about MK4 billion, which helps in providing basic essential health services, building infrastructure and procuring of medical equipment among others.
The President said Malawi is also appreciative of the fact that Norway has extended her assistance in the areas of food security, capacity building and education among others.
“I would like to assure the government of Norway that this cordial gesture has been and continues to be of great value to Malawi. We are hopeful that every single assistance received from you will be utilized prudently for the social-economic development of this country,” said Mutharika.
He said that he is committed to see that Malawi attains her development goals through promotion of good governance and the rule of law.
“As we embark on the journey to rebuilding the country, after 50 years of Independence, I want to assure you of my personal commitment to build effective governance institution. We are, therefore, grateful for the electoral and the general support to the governance initiatives which Norway renders to Malawi,” he said.
He said his government is geared towards delivering the promises made in Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) manifesto.
The President said the government would incorporate and implement some worthwhile propositions from the opposition parties and other such stakeholders to move the country forward.
Mutharika re-affirmed the words in his inaugural statement that this is not time to rest, this is not time wreck vengeance, but rather this is the time to build the country into the force for good.
